The discovery was made Sunday, Aug. 1, in Stamford when members of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation congregation gathered on the front lawn to host a "Meet Our New Minister" service.
"We found our Pride banner, which has been on display at the Bedford/Forest St. corner, had been slashed from its framework," the church said on Facebook.
The banner featured a rainbow image and the church logo, with lettering declaring "we are a Welcoming Congregation."
"A police report will be filed as we believe this is a hate crime, and obviously destruction of private property," the church said,
The church said the damage was an ugly reminder that "we still live in a society that expresses hatred for valued members of all communities.
The First Congregational Church of Stamford has offered to pay to have the sign replaced.
